There are many regulations when it comes to shipping Dangerous Goods (also called Hazardous Material or Haz Mat). This is to ensure the safety of those transporting it and is especially important for international shipping since that involves air travel and many items become more dangerous at altitude.
Depending on what you want to ship with DHL Express, you may need to have your accounts approved for shipping Dangerous Goods first. The type of Dangerous Goods being shipped will determine the type of approval you need. Full-regulated Dangerous Goods approval requires an on-site survey where a DHL DG expert meets with you to ensure that you know how to package Dangerous Goods, understand the regulations, and that you are an established business. Other types of Dangerous Goods (such as Lithium Batteries Section II) do not require an on-site survey but do require someone at your location be IATA certified and trained in shipping Dangerous Goods in order to be approved to ship with DHL Express.
Some countries don’t allow certain types of DG or have other restrictions on what they allow. We can help you know what DG types can be sent to the desired destination.
Be aware that some items may not technically be Dangerous Goods but may still require getting approved to ship with DHL Express. These items include Lithium Batteries Section II, Dry Ice or Biological Substances. And even with these items, some shipments may fall into an exception and may not require account approval.
You are welcome to call DHL’s Dangerous Goods Hotline at 866-817-3794 to see if DHL can ship the item, if an approved account is required for that item, and what special markings, wording or stickers need to be on the waybill and/or package for your shipment.
